Finally, after all the bickering, submitting, re-submitting and the rest of red tape, I have been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for the incidents that occured in Ramadi way back in September. Our higher headquarters at first said I didnt qualify for the CIB because I wasn't Infantry qualified. After showing them that not only did I have the Infantry MOS but that it was my primary job now, they said I still dont qualify because of the job I am doing here. While deployed, I am working in the battalion administration section. It didn't matter that when this deployment is over that I would be a Team Leader in a dismount squad. Well, as everything in the Army, it's all in how you interpret the regulations. You gotta love the Army in that sense, the regulations are there for soldiers to follow and the leaders to enforce. But their is always such a "gray" area that leaves room for interpretation. I was starting to think that I would not be awarded the CIB and what sucks is I didnt qualify for the new Combat Action Badge because that is for everyone who is NOT Infantry. So I was in a Catch 22. Lo and behold to my surprise, we get some orders in the mail and what is there? My CIB orders awarding me the badge for the incident in Ramadi in September. I guess someone up in the higher headquarters blew the dust off the regulation and read it one more time. The funny thing is while in theater, we are not allowed to wear any badges that we are awarded. But you can bet your ass when I am getting ready to board that freedom bird and leave this hell hole I will be proudly wearing that badge. I deserve it as much as the next soldier. Now, just waiting on news of whether or not I will be awarded the Purple Heart for that. That is probably sitting on some General's desk right now collecting dust. Oh well, that is one award I didn't want to get. We'll see.
