Today marked a historic and triumphant day here in Iraq. As the sun began to sink below the horizon and the polls closed, the count
begun. Whether or not the constitution is ratified will unfold in the days ahead. The fact that the citizens of this nation, amidst the overwhelming threats of terror and mayhem, made the important decision to take part in the fate of this country is heroic in its own right.
Leading up to this day, tensions have been rising throughout this stricken country as insurgents began their propaganda campaigns threatening to kill anyone who voted or the usual anti-american slogans they have used all along. All the major parties involved, the Sunnis,Kurds, and Shiites were making last minute attempts to get backing from the citizens as all three parties came to terms. The coalition forces were on constant watch for an uprising in attacks from the insurgents. All of the planning, coordinating, evaluating, re-evaluating, re-planning, re-coordinating, all these stress inducing events were high right up until the polls opened this morning.
No one knew for sure what the voter turn out would be, what attacks would be made, and finally what the voters decisions would be. As the polls closed the election officials were able to take a sigh of relief as 2 of the 3 questions were answered. The answer to the third question will be answered in due time. The citizens of Iraq stood up today against chaos, terror and animosity to voice their opinions. By making the decision to help change the fate of this country is a remarkable feat that should not go unrecognized. When they went to the polls today, they brought with them hope. Hope that one day this country can be free of tyranny, free of terror, free from the diseases of evil.
So now I call upon you, the citizens of Iraq, to continue to stand up to the radicals and fascist who terrorize your neighborhood, who torture and murder people for speaking what they believe or for backing the new government. Your new government, military, and the coalition forces cannot rid this country of these beasts without your continued support and help. For the first time in the history of your nation, your voice matters
. One voice cannot reform a country, but one million voices
can. By going to the polls today to vote on your constitution, you have won a battle on many levels. You show your government that you support them and you show the insurgents you are not scared. My hat is off to you, the citizens, for marking this day as the day
you stood up for what you believe.
